Ox bile is a traditionally used additive for watercolor and gouache paints. It serves to ensure a smooth flow of paints and improves their durability.
Winsor & Newton’s ox bile for watercolor and tempera is transparent white in color and has a pungent, characteristic smell. A few drops of it are mixed with the water to thin the paints in order to ensure the smoothness of the layers and increase their durability. It can be used to soften hard and coarse-grained papers, and for this purpose a diluted solution of ox bile is pre-applied to hard and coarse-grained paper, because after drying it softens its surface and helps to improve the retention of paints on the paper.
Designed for watercolor, gouache and tempera, Winsor & Newton’s ox bile is available in a bottle with a capacity of 75 ml.
